Commercial Page Checklist

Your commercial service pages are where search traffic becomes revenue. This checklist covers every element these pages need to rank in search and convert visitors into paying customers.

A commercial page is any page on your website that exists to generate a lead or sale. It is the page someone lands on when they search for a specific service you offer. Unlike a blog post or resource page, the commercial page has one job: turn a visitor into a customer.

Most local businesses have commercial pages, but few have pages that are optimized for both search engines and conversion. A page might rank decently but fail to convert because it lacks trust signals or a clear call to action. Another might have great content but no keyword targeting, so it never gets found. This checklist ensures your pages do both. For a deeper look at how your specific service pages perform, a website audit will surface the highest-impact improvements.

Research and Strategy

  • Primary keyword for the page is identified using search volume and intent data
  • Secondary keywords and related terms are mapped for natural inclusion
  • Competitor pages for the same keyword are reviewed for content gaps
  • Search intent is confirmed (informational, navigational, or transactional)
  • A unique value proposition for this specific service is defined
  • The target audience for this page is clearly identified

Page Structure

  • Page has a single, descriptive H1 tag that includes the primary keyword
  • Content is organized with logical H2 and H3 subheadings
  • The page is scannable with short paragraphs, bullet points, and clear sections
  • A table of contents is included for pages with 1500+ words
  • The URL slug is short, descriptive, and includes the target keyword
  • Breadcrumbs are implemented for navigation and schema purposes

Keyword Targeting

  • Primary keyword appears in the H1, title tag, and first 100 words
  • Meta description includes the primary keyword and a call to action
  • Keyword is used naturally throughout the content (not stuffed)
  • LSI keywords and related phrases are woven into the content
  • The page targets one primary topic (not multiple unrelated services)
  • Location modifiers are included if the service is geographically specific

Content Quality

  • Page explains the problem the service solves in language customers use
  • The service process or methodology is clearly described
  • Specific outcomes and benefits are highlighted (not just features)
  • Content is unique — not copied from other pages on the site or competitors
  • Industry jargon is avoided or explained when necessary
  • The page includes a minimum of 800-1200 words of substantial content
  • Content answers the top questions customers ask before purchasing

Trust Signals

  • Customer testimonials or reviews are displayed on the page
  • Case studies or before-and-after examples are included where relevant
  • Certifications, licenses, and awards are visible
  • Guarantees or warranties are clearly stated
  • Real photos of your work, team, or facility are used
  • Third-party review badges (Google, Yelp) are displayed
  • Years of experience or number of customers served is mentioned

Calls to Action

  • A primary CTA is visible above the fold
  • The CTA uses action-oriented, specific language
  • A secondary CTA exists for visitors not ready to commit
  • Phone number is displayed and tappable on mobile
  • CTA is repeated at natural decision points throughout the page
  • Form fields are minimized — only essential information is requested
  • A response time expectation is set (e.g., within 2 hours)
  • CTA visually stands out from surrounding content

Schema and Structured Data

  • Service schema is implemented with name, description, and provider
  • FAQPage schema is added if the page includes an FAQ section
  • LocalBusiness or Organization schema references the service
  • Review or AggregateRating schema is implemented if reviews are shown
  • Schema is validated using Google Rich Results Test

Internal Linking

  • The page links to related service pages within your site
  • The page is linked from your main navigation or a services hub
  • Blog posts that mention this service link to this page
  • City or location pages reference this service where relevant
  • The page links to relevant resource content for visitors who want to learn more
  • Anchor text is descriptive and keyword-relevant

Images and Media

  • Images are compressed and served in modern formats (WebP or AVIF)
  • Image file names include descriptive, keyword-relevant terms
  • Alt text is written for accessibility and includes relevant context
  • Images are properly sized for the layout (not oversized and scaled down)
  • A hero image or video reinforces the page message
  • Image dimensions are specified to prevent layout shift

FAQ Section

  • At least 3-5 frequently asked questions are included
  • Questions come from real customer conversations, not guesses
  • Answers are concise, helpful, and accurate
  • FAQ content is unique to this specific service page
  • FAQ schema markup is implemented for rich results
  • Questions address objections or hesitations customers commonly have

Quality Assurance

  • Page loads in under 3 seconds on mobile devices
  • All links work correctly (no 404 errors)
  • Form submissions are tested and working
  • Page displays correctly on desktop, tablet, and mobile
  • Phone number click-to-call works on mobile
  • Metadata is complete and accurate for this specific page
  • Content has been proofread for spelling and grammar
  • Page passes Google Mobile-Friendly Test

Why Commercial Pages Fail

The most common reason a commercial page does not generate leads is a mismatch between what the visitor expects and what the page delivers. If someone searches for "emergency plumbing repair" and lands on a generic plumbing page, the disconnect causes them to leave and find a competitor who speaks directly to their need.

Every commercial page should match a specific search intent. The page content, headline, and call to action should all align with the reason someone searched for that term. This means you need separate pages for separate services, not a single page that tries to cover everything you do.

Another common failure is the absence of trust signals. A visitor who has never heard of your business needs evidence that you are credible before they will share their contact information. Reviews, testimonials, certifications, and real project photos all reduce the perceived risk of reaching out. Without them, even a well-written page will underperform.

Finally, many commercial pages fail because the call to action is either missing, vague, or buried. "Contact us" is not a CTA — it is a label. Strong CTAs tell the visitor exactly what will happen when they click: "Get Your Free Quote in 5 Minutes," "Book a Consultation Today," or "Call Now for Emergency Service." Specific language outperforms generic language every time.

The Relationship Between SEO and Conversion

SEO gets visitors to your page. Conversion turns them into customers. A page that ranks #1 but converts at 1% will generate fewer leads than a page that ranks #5 but converts at 5%. Both matter, and the best commercial pages excel at both.

On the SEO side, your page needs clear keyword targeting, proper metadata, structured data, and content that matches search intent. On the conversion side, it needs trust signals, a compelling value proposition, a clear CTA, and a frictionless contact process.

If you are building new service pages from scratch, our guide to website design for contractors covers how to structure these pages for both search and conversion. If you already have pages that need improvement, the service page CTA checklist focuses specifically on optimizing your calls to action.
